The Finishing Touch on a Picture-Book Barn
Some garage doors are meant to blend in. This one was never going to do that.
This week, our team installed a 12×12 Clopay Modern Steel™ Ultra-Grain® Plank door on a red barn in Forest Falls. The Barnwood finish gives it the look of weathered horizontal boards, while the clean, flush design keeps it feeling modern. It’s a combination that fits the building beautifully: rustic, but not old-fashioned.
And at 12 feet wide by 12 feet tall, it definitely makes an impression.
This project has been more than a year in the making. Our customer spent a lot of time planning the new building and exploring options for the door. He went back and forth over the design, considering different looks before settling on the Barnwood finish. We were excited to work with him throughout that process. It’s fun to see a project take shape over time, especially when you get to help with one of the final details.
And we think he landed on a great choice. The finished building has that classic, picture-book barn look, with a garage door that feels like it belongs there while still bringing something special to the design.
Barnwood look, steel door
The first thing you notice is the wood-look finish. The horizontal planks vary in length, and their grain pattern doesn’t repeat, giving the surface a natural variation. Clopay digitally prints the design onto steel and adds an embossed texture.
That mix works especially well on this barn. The Barnwood finish has a weathered, grounded feel that looks right at home against the red siding and the trees surrounding the property. The horizontal pattern carries across the large door, adding texture without making the front of the building feel too busy.
It’s one of those doors that makes you stop and take a second look. Which, if you’re going to have a garage door this big, isn’t a bad thing.
A modern door at home on a barn
The Modern Steel Ultra-Grain Plank collection has a contemporary profile, but the Barnwood finish gives it plenty of warmth. It’s a nice reminder that “modern” doesn’t have to mean cold or stark. A simple door design can still have a lot of texture and personality.
The style can work with homes ranging from mid-century and farmhouse to coastal cottage and transitional. Clean horizontal lines pair with the wood-inspired finish to create a look that feels both current and welcoming.
Of course, choosing a garage door is personal. There are plenty of styles and finishes to consider, and the right choice depends on the building, the surrounding colors and materials, and the feeling you want when you look at it. That’s part of why we enjoy helping customers explore the options. Sometimes someone knows exactly what they want from the start. Other times, as with this project, it takes a little looking, comparing, and imagining before the right choice becomes clear.
The finishing touch on a big project
Adding a new building to your property is a big undertaking, with plans to make and decisions at every stage. We were honored to work with our customer over the past year and help him choose the final detail for his barn. We hope our part was the least stressful piece of the project.
The Barnwood door was a great choice. It complements the red siding, adds warmth to the large opening, and helps bring the whole picture-book barn look together. We’re grateful he trusted us with the installation, and we hope he enjoys the finished building for many years.
